How to find cash you never knew you had

When you’re looking for a bit of extra cash, what do you do? Empty all your pockets? Dive down the back of the sofa? You could be wasting your time. There are times when we all wish our money stretched a little further - however much you have. Here are our 5 steps to finding cash that’s slipping through the net, and making it work for you:

1. Know what you’ve got coming in

The first step to making the most of your finances is to know exactly what you’ve got coming in each month. Remember to factor in any bonuses or benefits you receive.

2. Know what you’re spending on essentials

If you pay most of your bills by direct debit, without keeping a close eye on what you’re spending, you may find that you’re paying more than you need to. Remember to send regular meter readings and keep a close eye on your direct debit payments to make sure you’re not overpaying.

3. Set a budget

Setting a budget can help everyone to understand their finances. Try coming up with a few spending categories such as eating out, shopping and clothes, and setting yourself a limit in each category. It sounds like a lot of effort, but sticking to a budget can really help you to see where your money goes each month!

4. Look for room to save

After sticking to your budget for a few weeks you may find that, simply by paying attention to where your money goes, you notice areas where savings can be made. Try playing around with your budget to see where you can make savings - you might be surprised!

5. Put your extra cash to good use

You’ve worked out you can save £15 a week by cutting out takeaway coffees - so what? It’s time to decide what to do with your new-found cash. Why not set up a direct debit into your savings account or ISA and see how much you can save in a year?
